This monumental structure was once an orphanage, funded by the extraordinary entrepreneur and philanthropist, Margaret Haughery, affectionately known as the "Bread Woman of New Orleans." Haughery's legacy is woven into the very fabric and stylings of the hotel, and her spirit lives on through the meticulous preservation of the building's original features and passion for community spirit.

The visionary Texan hotelier, Liz Lambert, has sprinkled her magic touch throughout this 75-room sanctuary. The design incorporates an overall modern Italian aesthetic, with George Venson of Voutsa contributing to the hotel's unique atmosphere. Many of the furnishings are carefully sourced from the city's antique and vintage shops, such as Sud, Lucullus Antiques, and Merchant House.

Delving into the hotel's history reveals a delightful tale intertwined with its current design. The financial ledgers of Margaret Haughery, the orphanage's benefactor, were unearthed during the restoration process and served as inspiration for the unexpected patterns that adorn the hotel's walls, fabrics, furnishings, robes, and my new favorite (gifted) silk scarf. Without knowing the story of the ledgers or Margaret, these vibrant marbled prints remind guests not to take life too seriously, while classy vintage touches pay homage to the city's rich cultural tapestry.

The corridors exude a monochromatic and subdued ambiance, leading to rooms that offer delightful punches of color and those aforementioned prints. Each room is thoughtfully designed to cocoon guests in comfort, with an eclectic mix of textures and materials that exude whimsy and sophistication. Sink into the plush bedding, playfully indulge in "snow angels" in the bed, and get your vacation spirit on.

Food and drink

Hotel St. Vincent fully embraces the renowned gastronomic wonders of New Orleans, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the local culinary scene. San Lorenzo, the hotel's signature all-day restaurant, pays homage to the patron saint of cooks with a menu that showcases regional New Orleans influences in a space reminiscent of classic New Orleans dining rooms.

Beyond my emotional connection, Hotel St. Vincent's location in the Lower Garden District offers strategic access to many of the city's captivating areas. Here, you can escape the bustling tourist crowds of the French Quarter and the traffic of the Warehouse District and CBD, while still remaining conveniently close to them. Whether you prefer a quick taxi, a ride on the streetcar, or hopping on a bus, you can easily venture to these areas. Standing in the Marigny, a vibrant and colorful neighborhood in New Orleans, is Hotel Peter and Paul. The hotel's visionary, Nathalie Jordi, saw the mid-19th-century Saints Peter and Paul Parish complex and set out to reimagine it into the delightful and charming boutique hotel we have today.

After four years of meticulous restoration, Nathalie, in collaboration with the design and hotel geniuses at ASH NYC, has created a haven for visitors and locals in the city of New Orleans. Friendly interiors are adorned with French antiques, locally-made furnishings, and cheerful gingham prints. The 100% local staff are the warmest of spirits, and with the fresh dishes and cocktails served up at The Elysian Bar and courtyard restaurant, you're going to be smiling your entire visit...I certainly was.

The Hotel

Hotel Peter and Paul is a landmark occupying an entire city block in the Marigny and comprised of several structures––a former schoolhouse, convent, rectory, and church–– each with a story to tell and a design narrative woven in. The result is a stay with wonderfully unique rooms, a community gathering place, soulful drinking and dining, and one jaw-dropping event space.

Rooms and Design

Designed by ASH NYC the common spaces and rooms are bright and welcoming with gingham touches as a recurrent motif. Treasures to be found in the hotel include items selected from European antique fairs and New Orleans estates, locally handcrafted poster beds, curtains and armoires, and a collection of Catholic icons...paying homage to the parish, of course. Decorative painted walls create surprising moments, like the mural of playful lemons in the cafe, and are mostly executed by Ann Marie Auricchio.

I arrived at Hotel Peter and Paul on a perfect New Orleans spring day. As I walked into the lobby and reception, located within the Schoolhouse, I was awed by the grand space. Elegantly and minimally designed, the historically preserved architectural elements take center stage. The sunlight beamed in and a delicious subtropical breeze was blowing off the river. Smiles greeted me and ushered me to the front desk. Pretty sure I wasn't going to want to leave for a while.

Accented by large lantern-style pendants, the central lobby staircase ushers you upstairs to an airy corridor with rooms to either side. The schoolhouse rooms are classically designed and include varied sizes to suit solo travelers to families of 4. Each floor is decorated in a palette of either earthy blue, green, yellow, or red––colors inspired mostly by 14-18th-century paintings. Creative placement of these rooms may mean you're sleeping in what was once the former gym, a classroom, or backstage of the school's theater.

The Rectory dates back to 1875 and is where the clergy used to reside. Today it serves up some seriously good eats at the Elysian Bar from the James Beard nominees at Bacchanal Wine. You'll also find five cozy baroque-inspired rooms in shades of soft pink, peach, and crimson––some overlooking the bar's courtyard. The Rector's Repose, located here, is arguably one of the most romantic rooms you will find in the city.

The Convent is where the Marianite nuns who taught at the school lived. Seven quiet rooms in this building are decorated in blues and ivory, some with fireplaces and all with lovely tassel-laden custom canopy beds.

Select rooms feature claw-foot bathtubs or balconies.

Food and drink

The Elysian Bar is located in The Rectory, and is named after Elysian Fields Ave. While Elysian Fields was originally an ancient Greek reference, in modern times the name often refers to a place that makes you feel a sense of bliss after leaving it. After having frequented the Elysian Bar multiple times during my visit, I think it’s aptly named.

The restaurant and bar offer a variety of spaces for different times of day and mood. You can choose from classically designed parlors with calming decor and Italianate fireplaces (fun fact: the nuns and priests used to hang out here watching iconic TV shows through the 80s and 90s); a cheerful plant-filled sunroom with custom-made tables and chairs, perfect for breakfast; the "jewel box" bar inspired by cypress tree roots, stealing the show; and a perfectly charming inner courtyard. We won't encourage dine and dash, but if you must, there's also a small grab-n-go cafe in the front room (a former chapel) for your essentials of morning beverages and pastries.

The Elysian Bar is brought to you by the team at James-Beard-nominated, Bacchanal Fine Wine. Don’t forget to make a trip to the Bywater to visit it as well.

The Church of St Peter and Paul is extraordinary and has become a fortunate gathering place for locals and visitors. As a special event space, it is remarkable. And community events are held nearly every day, from yoga and Pilates to choir practice, neighborhood association meetings, Christmas caroling, kids' piano recitals, experimental theater, and beyond. The Hotel Peter and Paul project has always been one to help revitalize and unite a beautiful neighborhood and the city of New Orleans.

The Visionaries

Nathalie Jordi, a New Orleans-based journalist living in the neighborhood, had a dream for the collection of structures at St Peter and Paul. It was a daunting prospect so she enlisted the help of boutique hoteliers and designers at ASH NYC to help her realize it.

The Hotel

The hotel was dreamed up by owners Anuschka and Wim. They lived on the same street opposite the empty 1910 building that was to become La Paulowna. With her experience in fashion and his carpentry and furniture-building skills, they imagined a boutique hotel as lovely and hospitable as the city. The result is carefully restored and furnished boutique hotel with service and warmth that keeps corporate and leisure guests returning again and again.

Rooms

Each one of the nine charming guest suites reflects the owners' eye for detail. Rooms feature natural materials and high windows overlooking the plaza below, for a serenely elegant yet homey experience. Refurbished family heirlooms, like Delft Blauw pieces that belonged to the owner’s father, appear alongside repurposed materials, creating unique combinations and one-of-a-kind rooms. Handmade details from local lighting designer JSPR and furniture by Couqou, Wim (the owner), and some great secondhand finds add to the custom character of the spaces.

Food and drink

The ground floor restaurant, Bayonne, focuses on Basque specialties made from mostly organic ingredients. The restaurant maintains a close relationship with the hotel but sits under different ownership. You'll see a lot of locals here, which is what we like. Rotating menus are served up in a cozy candle-filled environment of recycled wood flooring and refurbished vintage furniture. We love the large garden terrace, perfect for people-watching in any weather. They serve all day, from breakfast to dinner.

If not Bayonne, there are plenty of options within 10-15 minutes walking or biking. This area is exceptional for its great cups of coffee, so you’re in the right spot if you need that cuppa something first thing.

The area

The Hague has flown under the radar for way too long. And this makes it even better for today's traveler. With minimal tourists but maximum elegance and the picturesque characteristics of Holland, the city is a happy surprise for many visitors. 

Close to many of the city's most important landmarks and monuments like the Peace Palace and the Royal Palace, La Paulowna is located in Zeeheldenkwartier, a neighborhood that's many a local's favorite. It's at the heart of historic streets lined with small cafés, restaurants, and boutiques. You can wander the streets on foot, hop on one of the hotel's bikes, or jump on a tram to the beach for white dune views as far as the eye can see. Can't imagine a more perfectly placed hotel for a visit to the city.

One thing we love about the Hague is its chill vibe. Even though you’re above a vibrant plaza at La Paulowna, you still find a lot of quiet after 10pm. The Hague isn’t known for its big party scene…its got more of a family and entrepreneurial revelry going on. For the best late nights, a lot of people head to nearby university towns like Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Leiden.

Your hosts

Hosts Anuschka and Wim come from a family of hoteliers and restauranteurs– hospitality runs in the family…you might even run into one of their young daughters hanging out after school. Add their combined expertise in design and their shared love of natural and recycled materials to this pedigree, resulting in the carefully renovated building that houses La Paulowna. As Wim made plans and sketches, Anuschka collected antiques from local markets. Their personal touches make a stay at this small hotel so memorable.

Good to know

A few years back, the hotel extended to a lovely building across the plaza where three rooms are located. These rooms are slightly smaller but also offer a lot of privacy and pretty views of the hotel itself. 

If you do have to drive to the property, their are two garages located close walking distance.

Keep in mind this is a historic Dutch property which means: steep stairs. There is no lift/elevator, and you might have to manage a few flights of stairs on the way up. Mind the house cat when you do :)

The Hotel

Envisioned by architect Matthew Falkner, the property was designed to respect the existing character of the island. The property consists of seven casitas, a seawater pool, a spa below the canopies, and a yoga deck. 

The structures were built almost entirely of timber from trees blown down during Hurricane Felix. Those remaining were preserved, and none of the boulders were moved from their original locations. What results is an organic, free-flowing design that incorporates Jicaro into the island's natural terrain. Their philosophy around design, nature, and social impact has earned them recognition on multiple occasions by National Geographic as one of the world's best eco-lodges.

Rooms

The two-story casitas have an airy upstairs bedroom and a spacious downstairs living area. Just outside, private waterfront decks are perfect for taking in the lake views over morning coffee and banana bread or for reading a book in the hammock. Most casitas are exposed to the views, while some are more blanketed by the tropical vegetation for more privacy. All are sublime.

Food and drink

At the center of Jicaro's island experience is lakeside dining alongside their open kitchen. Working exclusively with locally-sourced artisan products and fresh ingredients, Jicaro's restaurant serves up three multi-course meals daily as well as snacks and beverages. The meals included with each guest's stay showcase Nicaragua's flavors and are also available for vegetarians and vegans alike. Gastronomic bliss is served up with breathtaking views over the lake and terrain beyond.

The area

Jicaro is surrounded by natural beauty. A beautiful example of Central America's colonial past, the UNESCO city of Granada is rich with historical vitality. The visionary

Owner Karen fell in love with the gently lapping waters of Lake Nicaragua on a visit to the area in 2007. A few weeks later, she wired over a deposit for what would become the future site of Jicaro. Today, her dream has become a reality, and promises that guests will leave just as enamored with the island as she was.

The streets of Condesa are overflowing with tropical plants, and urban parks–– perfect for taking in the city on foot. Your hosts

Casa9 is the result of the owner, Patricia's varied expertise in history, advertising, travel, and culinary arts. A creative at heart and the world in her eyes, she's a Chilanga, chingona, y buena onda, living part-time in Spain. The house tells her story in a way. Typical of La Condesa, facades are European in style and grace–– Casa9 leans French–– but when you pass the threshold, you experience a modern interpretation of Mexico's heart and soul. Everything is made by Mexican hands, from the walls to the furniture to the wine. Sometimes contemporary design can feel too austere and cold. But here, Patricia and the team have created a space of warmth and love through their design and service. We just adore it.

Roberto, a Mexico City native with a wealth of local knowledge and creativity, is your full-time host. You'll find him putting together floral arrangements for the property made up of otherworldly tropical flowers and leaves. Roberto is also a talented coordinator of extraordinary events for guests. He arranges interesting and authentic excursions you might not easily find anywhere else. From hot air balloon rides over the ruins of Teotihuacan to temazcal ceremonies to in-house cocktail nights with local mixologists. You'll be amazed by the possible personalized experiences on the property and around the city.

Simply put, these hosts know the city. They know Mexico. Their taste is exemplary, and they want you to leave having experienced it.

Why we love it

Thoughtful details. From the ground up, this is a design lover's paradise. The history of the hotel is a lesson in both preservation and innovation. While the property was built as a luxurious private residence, it became neglected over the decades. It stayed in the same family until 2009, when the current owners of casa9 fell in love with it. Portions of the home were in ruin, while others were salvaged and restored, like the original stained glass windows. Design-loving owner Patricia breathed new life into the structure in collaboration with the playful and innovative Mexican architectural firm Habitación 116. The result is a cool, soul-filled bed and breakfast in the heart of one of the world's most exciting cities.

While YOURS was under construction, I watched the progress from the street, walking or riding by weekly to observe the transformation. Knowing the owners, Daphne and Wouter, from before the project began, I could only imagine what they would create. Chatting on a rainy day in the neighborhood over a cappuccino, Daphne described to me all that the intimate boutique hotel would be. For months, I chomped at the bit to see the outcome...

Inside the 19th-century stone entryway lies a minimalistic oasis in the heart of Valencia's colorful and eclectic Ruzafa neighborhood. At YOURS, cool beige linens and walls are paired with sleek wood details that create an atmosphere of absolute calm. Plants and local ceramics add life to the spaces, bringing warmth and softness to the contemporary design and layout. In the courtyard, surrounded by palms, is a small lap pool, a welcoming sanctuary after a busy and potentially hot day in the city.

The Hotel

From the very start, the hotel's owners made deliberate choices to collaborate with local businesses. Working closely with an architectural firm from the neighborhood, they reimagined the centuries-old space into the 12-room hotel it is today.

Rooms

The hotel's 12 guest rooms include a range of suites, lofts, apartments, and a penthouse, all designed in a minimalistic style that feels serene. Mediterranean white walls and streamlined wood are the backdrops for the interior spaces. Guest rooms boast comfortable modern amenities like luxurious beds and linens, which are all locally sourced. In the bathrooms, you'll find rain showers and natural, eco-friendly toiletries by the socially conscious Marie Stella Maris. In addition, each room is equipped with a balcony, perfect for catching the Mediterranean breeze and the last rays of the sun.

Details

Design features from Valencian furniture brand Viccarbe and lighting company Arkoslight were selected to highlight local makers. In addition, botijos adorn nooks in each room. These ceramic jars were locally made and are inspired by the traditional vessels originally designed to keep water cool for Spanish farmers in the fields centuries ago. They are stunning and sweet and can be purchased from the boutique in the lobby. While the property is contemporary, each carefully selected detail gives YOURS an unmistakable craftsman touch and welcoming vibe.

Food and drink

There is no restaurant on-site, but there is an excellent cafe in the communal lounge. There, you can enjoy a made-to-order breakfast sourced with seasonal, local ingredients. Coffee is provided by Bluebell Coffee Roasters, one of our favorite bean providers, cafes, and female-owned/operated businesses in Valencia. Besides a delicious cup, the small menu includes options like fresh juices, avocado toast, and homemade granola. After a day out exploring, one of the friendly staff will be happy to serve you a beverage you can lazily sip in the courtyard by the pool.

The area

Ruzafa, a bustling neighborhood outside the historic walled center of Valencia, was named for the Arabic word for "garden." Today, a solid artistic and cultural scene has bloomed in the area. It is a hub for creatives, workers, immigrants, expats, and life-long locals. At the center of the district is the legendary Mercat de Russafa, which has been the pulse of the neighborhood's everyday life since opening its doors in 1957. You'll also find more contemporary spaces like art galleries, design studios, and cafes lining the streets. And the gastronomic scene is unmatched, with local mom-and-pop establishments side-by-side with a variety of Michelin star eateries. Hip and vibrant, this is a great neighborhood to soak up Valencia's authentic and alternative sides.

The Visionaries

After falling in love with Valencia upon first visiting in 2013, Dutch owners Daphne and Wouter dreamed of building their own boutique hotel from scratch. In 2017, after searching for the perfect site, they found the old laundry service building which would become YOURS. Working with local designers throughout the process, they transformed the space into what it is today. A uniquely contemporary property operated with the core values of authenticity, hospitality, and design.

When Daphne and Wouter aren't there (and often even when they are), Kris will be at your service. Kris is another Dutch transplant and knows the city well. She has worked with the owners for years in hospitality before opening YOURS and runs it with the same high-quality, guest-first mentality.

Good to know

When you enter YOURS, you might wonder what smells so lovely. Well, it's the candles burning that they had custom crafted and poured by local artisans. Even better, they sell these candles so you can take the serenity of your stay back home with you. Good Trips travelers receive one complimentary.

Ruzafa is unmistakably one of our favorite Valencia neighborhoods. It is also one of the most lively, with some bars, restaurants, and discos staying open until the wee hours. Don't worry, though, as the neighborhood (and Valencia) is safe, and YOURS is quiet once you cross the threshold.

Located on a tropical island in the Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama, this 400-acre private eco-resort is out of the pages of a fantasy travel novel. 

In my Landscape Architecture graduate program, we had close ties with Panama and a focus on the country through projects and eco-tourism classes. Forming friendships with locals and learning about Panama's culture, environment, and tourism started my love affair with this colorful and soulful country. Since creating Good Trips, I've been searching for the hotel that would be our first in lovely Panama, and after Isla Palenque, the bar is set high…oh so high. 

Isla Palenque is everything. Rich in lush forest, with seven secluded beaches, and sacred history of archaeological significance, Isla Palenque embodies a truly untouched tropical island experience. 

The estate's nine accommodations, each on a different side of the island, overlook pristine beaches from their surroundings. Guests come here drawn by the pull of an undiscovered, faraway place. They get what they come for: the anticipated rejuvenation body and renewed spirit. But what we love about Isla Palenque is the wonder and curiosity it induces for the landscape and its people, which is not so easy to find in a luxury resort.

The Hotel

At the heart of Isla Palenque lies Playa Palenque, the largest beach on the property. Located on the island's western side, spanning 1.3 km of pristine coastline, this is the spot to eat, drink, relax, and take in the best ocean views. Your days could include dips in the infinity pool overlooking the ocean, island hopping, reading from a hammock, learning artisanal fishing methods, building forts in the jungle with your kids, or dining on hyper-local, organic, and delicious Panamanian food while the sun sets over the waves at Las Rocas Restaurant & Bar.

Rooms

Eight beachside bungalows and a luxury estate are joined by forested walkways that immerse guests in the jungle of Isla Palenque. The bungalows, located on the island's west coast, are tucked away in palm groves steps from the beach. Each has an open-air bath, lounge area, and private path down to the pristine waters of Playa Palenque. The intimate six-room estate blends seamlessly with its tropical setting on the island's east side above Playa Primera beach. Tucked between ancient trees and boasting views of the beach below, the estate creates an environment that blends both rainforest and oceanfront.

Food and drink

Isla Palenque's beachfront restaurant Las Rocas is nestled in the palm groves overlooking the lapping waves of the Pacific. Sustainable and locally sourced (including produce from the resort's organic garden), seasonal dishes are designed to encourage the sampling of local specialties highlighting the island's culinary traditions. In addition, Las Rocas is Dock to Dish certified. This means they receive freshly caught seafood from the fishers down the road, ensuring sea life is protected, and local vendors' livelihoods are sustained.

The area

Isla Palenque has a rich history under its ancient forest canopy. The name "Palenque" comes from the word for "sanctuary." Home to a pre-Columbian community, the island's beauty made it a sacred ceremonial site. Hundreds of years later, the island remains a secluded natural reserve for hundreds of species of plants and animals and a sanctuary away from civilization.

What to do

It may be 5-star luxury, but it's certainly not stuffy. On the island, you can dig in and get active. Nature lovers can access the hotel's collection of outdoor gear. Guests can take kayaks and paddleboards down to the beach or explore the shoreline with snorkeling gear. Whether you're into whale watching or not, seeing whales frolic about in the sea is awe-inspiring. In August, the whales migrate into the Gulf of Chiriquí to calve and typically stay until October. For the foodies, the culinary team is ready to teach you artisanal and traditional methods for fishing and foraging for food in the jungle. Then, they'll use your ingredients to prepare a feast accompanied by local spirits, wine, and beers. 

You'd also be on the right island for a trip of pure relaxation. For yoga enthusiasts, hidden, private spaces and platforms are perfect for developing your practice under the palms and coconut groves. You might follow any of your activities with a wellness treatment in the privacy of your room, with the soundtrack of Panama's Pacific ocean in the background.

Inspired by the adventures of protagonists like Robinson Crusoe, owner Benjamin Loomis was drawn to life on a tropical island. After spending five years exploring Playa Palenque and its surroundings, Loomis, the lead architect behind Isla Palenque, created a resort inspired by its environment. 

He took detailed steps to ensure that the old-growth forest was preserved as much as possible in the development of the property. Artisanal carpenters were hired, and sustainable materials were used to create and sustain what they consider their greatest luxury amenity: the island itself. 

Hiring and training locals is key to the eco resort's philosophy of sustainable hospitality. At the resort, the staff is almost entirely Panamanian, with many coming from nearby towns–– an ongoing commitment to the surrounding community.

Good to know

Your experience at Isla Palenque is all-inclusive. It includes arrival and departure via boat transfer to and from Boca Chica, three gourmet meals per day with non-alcoholic drinks, tours, and equipment such as kayaks and paddleboards. The Hotel

Handcrafted with a vibrant touch of luxury, the inspiration for Aguas Claras came from Costa Rican multimedia artist Elizabeth Steinvorth's desire to put her various artworks to good use. Nearly everything in the hotel is from her body of work or an original creation made by her network of artist friends. The property is adorned with artistic details– from floral watercolors to mosaics and upcycled antique furniture– each carefully collected by Steinvorth and her daughter Elena. "The hotel is really an art project," Steinvorth says. "It's the union of all my artwork from my life…like a retrospective." All the details of Aguas Claras have been carefully created and curated. 

Rooms

The property comprises six luxury bungalows, five themed suites, and a two-story Caribbean House, all uniquely arranged spaces. Each accommodation is decorated with one-of-a-kind art pieces, reclaimed furniture, and handcrafted objects, creating rooms that playfully blend with their tropical surroundings. 

The gardens surrounding the stand-alone bungalows provide space and seclusion for those looking for privacy. Verandas and open-air showers blend the indoors and outdoors, bringing the famed nature of Costa Rica front and center. For a large family or group of friends, Casa Floralia is the best alternative to renting a house in Puerto Viejo. Food and drink

Papaya pinks and Caribbean blues. Terrazzo tiles and a jungle landscape. The colors, textures, and details are what make the Papaya Restaurant so effortlessly cool and are what sets it apart from the rest of Puerto Viejo. The Hotel

Housed in a 16th-century stone mansion in the medieval hamlet of Chiesanuova, some 200 meters above sea level, La Sosta di Ottone III features six suites with stunning views, a Michelin Guide recommended restaurant, and a panoramic terrace overlooking the sea.

Getting to the property is an adventure in itself. The winding road twists through the Ligurian hills before arriving outside La Sosta. The last 100 meters are only accessible by footpath (or tiny monorail!), a reminder of the rich and ancient history of the area.

Rooms

The six spacious guest rooms, some with beamed ceilings, are airy and comfortable. Shuttered windows look out over the terracotta rooftops and hills with glimpses of the sea or valley below. Some rooms are large enough to house 3-4 guests, handy in case you come with a small family or a few friends. 

Inspired by local traditions, the style of the hotel and rooms consists of soft pastel hues, paintings by local artists, and traditional details. We love the juxtaposition of the simple antique furnishings with contemporary touches by local designers such as Luceplan, known for his innovative and sustainable approach to creating lighting fixtures.

Food and drink

The downstairs restaurant serves up a menu of Ligurian specialties. The chef's set menus are made from scratch using ingredients from local producers and change daily. The menu is accompanied by a cellar stocked with a selection of natural regional wines hand-picked by a local sommelier. When the weather is good (and it often is), enjoying the terrace is quintessential "dolce far niente"– the art of doing nothing and slow travel at its best.

The area

La Sosta di Ottone III is an ideal place to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Ligurian Sea and the lush hills surrounding Cinque Terre. Upon entering Look To's entrance, you'll first be struck by the natural light streaming through the expansive Art Nouveau windows. Behind the 19th-century arcade of the piazza, the warm-colored and patterned walls of this bed & breakfast are a backdrop for an eclectic mix of art, antique objects, and mid-century furniture. Giuliana, a landscape architect by trade, is the visionary behind and owner of the property. It seems fitting that the home's four spacious suites, each named for a favorite flower of the Savoy, are generously decorated with colorful walls and botanical prints. They offer modern touches (like sound-proof windows) that make the stay that much more comfortable. Three of the rooms overlook the piazza, while the fourth presents views of the internal courtyard. Features like deep bathtubs, large picture windows, and original wallpaper pay homage to the historic grandeur of the property. 

Food and drink

The breakfast room might be the happiest place you've ever eaten. The warm light streaming in through the windows of the sun-yellow room is just a hint of the delights that await guests in the morning. Fresh pastries, local cheeses, jams, honey, and produce are hand-picked by Giuliana and served daily. Later in the day, enjoy coffee and aperitifs by the fireplace in the red hall as you peruse the library. It's our favorite room, and we could sit here for a long while. 

The area

Turin is a city that seduces visitors of all types. Staying at Look To allows guests to discover all the most fascinating places of the Piedmontese capital, from the squares to the arcades, the flowing river surrounded by the green hills on one side, and the historic buildings on the other. Baroque buildings, seemingly endless arcades, hidden courtyards, and impressive piazzas define Turin's regal streets. The colonnades of Piazza Vittorio Veneto are just outside the front door, lined with famed cafes and restaurants that spill out onto the square. 

Your hostess

Giuliana poured her design expertise into the property's renovation, drawing on travel, and nature. "Look To is the synthesis of my passions. I wanted to create a little pearl in this charming suite hotel in the historic center of Turin." 

Giuliana loves to welcome her guests in person, sharing the rich history and origins of the property and its surroundings. When you arrive,  you can stop to taste one of the chocolates your host will offer you, part of her careful selection of locally handmade products, which she selects.

Spending a few nights here will immerse you in authentic Sicily– new and old. Imagine sleeping on a bed fashioned from the relics of an ancient tank for pressing grapes inside a villa that once housed a millstone. These thoughtful moments, blending history and the present, can be found and experienced in every corner of the expansive property.

Food and drink

Locanda Nerrello serves fine Sicilian fare inspired by nature and the seasonal bounty that the onsite organic gardens provide. The team purchases any ingredients not sourced from the property from artisans in the area. 

We love the decor of this restaurant––set in a cozy home environment of small rooms which create varied spaces in which to eat. During the summer, expect dining with sea views on the terrace, and in the colder months, intimate fireside meals. 

Convivium Bar is the perfect setting for pre or post-dinner drinks. Housed in a former cellar, the heavy stone walls and brightly colored design details create a visual contrast that Monaci does so well. In addition, you can enjoy live music at Convivium with your perfectly mixed herbaceous spritz a few days a week.

Experiences

At Monaci, you sit amongst the rolling hills beneath Mount Etna, the highest and most active volcano in Europe. That might not sound like a place to go for rest and rejuvenation. Still, Mount Etna erupts regularly without endangering local populations and instead provides unique experiences and countless benefits to the island.

In my early twenties, I lived in the Austrian Alps for a semester. As an art history major focusing on the Italian Renaissance, you'd find me on the train south, headed into Italy every chance I got.

What I forever remember about those journeys was the view when we crossed the Italian border. The landscape dropped my jaw every time. Here, nestled between the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites in a quaint village with two names, lives Haus am Turm.

The Hotel

Completely renovated and redesigned in 2021, it's hard to believe the modern design touches that await you behind Haus Am Turm's blue facade. Located in the quaint village of Sterzing (also known as Vipiteno), the 15th-century townhouse has been in the same family for over 100 years. Haus am Turm contains twelve tasteful rooms with understated comfort, a bistro using products straight from the garden across the way, and a deep wine cellar that just might blow your mind. Veronika and Daniel are your hosts, and they take service to another level.

If Good Trips were a hotel in the Dolomites, this would be it.

Rooms

Simplicity. Fresh and light, Haus Am Turm's 12 guest rooms provide visitors with serenity and comfort through clean lines and high-quality amenities. There are four room types, and most boast small outdoor spaces like balconies or loggia, where guests can soak up the mountain views and take in glimpses of the streets below. 

Details. When reimagining the hotel in 2021, the owners thoughtfully considered each decision's impact on the environment, the community, and guests. Some of our favorite features include the wooden furniture providing visual harmony throughout the hotel and coming from the "green" Milanese designer, Plinio il Giovane. Bed linens and towels are organic Italian jacquard cotton. Bathrooms are lined in local Quarzit stone. Toiletries are all-natural and made in collaboration with local organic farmers. 

Food and drink

Located on the ground floor of the guesthouse––Vinzenz–– Haus Am Turm's on-site restaurant and bar is a favorite of guests and locals alike. In warmer months, people-watch from a table on the terrace in the bustling village center, and in colder months, gather around the big farm table next to the woodfire. 

Committed to the slow food movement, the restaurant collaborates with local farmers to source most of the ingredients for their dishes. In the summer, produce will be supplied even closer––from the garden located just across the street––a rare 0KM experience in an urban setting. In addition, the rotating seasonal menu uses nature as its muse, focusing on sustainable production and humane breeding and processing methods. 

At the bar, fresh juices and cocktails accompany an extensive wine selection. The cellar contains over 700 wines (we mentioned it was deep, yes?), with 70% from organic vineyards. Around 40 wine varieties are offered by the glass, so you'll have the chance to try a few while you're here. If you'd like a proper tasting, just ask.

The Area

Cradled in the picturesque peaks and valleys of the Dolomites, Sterzing-Vipiteno is the northernmost town in Italy. With roots going back millennia, this town has been at the convergence of European cultures since its founding. Even the region's road signs are posted in three languages. The Austrian facades, Gothic towers, and Italian piazzas of Sterzing's city center reflect the multinational roots of the area. It is the perfect place to wander the historic stone streets, explore boutiques, and enjoy an espresso on a terrace. 

Just steps from the center of town, there is a wide range of activities at one of the world's best and most picturesque playgrounds for outdoor enthusiasts. Sterzing–Vipiteno is a paradise for snow lovers with multiple ski slopes and a toboggan run over 9km long that sleds you right into town (bring your kids for this one!). 

In warmer months, trails for hiking or biking through the green meadows offer impressive views. A 1.5-hour hike will bring you to one of Veronika's favorite farm-to-table restaurants, Sprechenstein, where you'll find more vistas to drool over and superb eats.

All seasons are beautiful here and offer plenty to keep you occupied, whether you're just passing through or staying for a while.

Good to know

Haus am Turm, and the region in general, are kid-friendly. 

If apartments suit you better, check out Ida's Apartments, also run by the family, that offer the same high level of hospitality and quality.

The Hotel

Gran Hotel Montesol sits in the middle of Ibiza's historic Old Town, just 20 meters from the marina. The building, dating back to the 1930s, was the island's first hotel and the birthplace of its first tourism office. Declared a heritage site, Montesol allows you quick access to the areas of Ibiza's Old Town and the sparkling Mediterranean shores.

The hotel was recently acquired by the Experimental Group, renowned for sophisticated yet upbeat hospitality. The Interior

Keep an eye out for a redo of the property's interiors, coming at you in fall/winter of 2022. We're excited to see how Dorothée Meilichzon will reimagine the iconic structure. We're having fun trying to guess what color palette and details she will use to interpret and fuse the hotel's classic past with Ibiza's laid back vibes.

Food and drink

The restaurant and bar, Sabbaba, gets its name from a Hebrew word that means "no worries," and the cuisine reflects that sentiment perfectly with a playful take on mingling Spanish and Israeli flavors. This laid-back approach is the essence of Ibiza and is expressed in the design and atmosphere of the restaurant, which was recently updated by the notable Dorothée Meilichzon.

The menu includes a variety of colorful sharing dishes created by Chef Tomer Amedi, known for founding London's famous Israeli restaurant, The Palomar, and is accompanied by an extensive wine list and a cocktail menu dreamed up by the expert in-house mixologists.

Perched on the top floor of the Gran Montesol, the Montesol Rooftop greets guests with some of the island's best views. Ideal for escaping the bustle of the city, you can tuck into a delectable cocktail menu and locally inspired tapas on the terrace and enjoy a different perspective of Ibiza.

Experimental Beach Ibiza

Part of the Experimental Cocktail Club, the laid-back and free-spirited Experimental Beach Ibiza is situated along the secluded salt flats of Las Salinas. It boasts some of the best views along the island's shore. Arriving at this seaside restaurant is like stumbling into a scene of Balearic bliss, where a cool beachy soundtrack accompanies ocean vistas, exquisite farm-to-table food, and specialty cocktails.

It will take you 20-minutes via a €15 cab ride to get there, but once you arrive, relax and take in the sun on loungers or go for a dip in the pristine waters. Good Trips Tip: This is one of the places to experience the sunset on the island in a relaxed paradise of whitewashed wood and soft linens.

The Area

Known just as much for its buzzing nightlife and lively soul as it is for its white beaches and crystal-clear waters, Ibiza has exerted a pull on travelers for centuries. Overview

The Masseria, recently recovered from the ruins of an ancient olive oil mill dating back to 1600, offers three charming rooms characterized by a refined but simple beauty that highlights the essence of this historical property. Jean Louis and Danielle took care in all aspects of the renovation and design including furnishings by notable Italian designers––Paola Lenti, Kartell, and Agape to name a few. The decor offers a contemporary twist on an authentic setting among Ostuni’s traditional white lime walls.

Dagilupi’s luxury isn’t just about fancy services and high thread counts…it’s about space and curated details that you will dream about long after you have returned home.

Surroundings

Nestled between the small town of Ostuni and the Adriatic Sea, Dagilupi is at a crossroads of the authentic soul of Puglia. The property is only five minutes from the town, a quintessential white-walled Italian village on a hill. Ostuni’s old-fashioned atmosphere fascinates with its maze of narrow alleys dotted with espresso bars, shops, and great restaurants.

Just below the walls of “The White City,” a nature reserve of olive groves and footpaths lead to the white sands of the sea. To escape the touristy areas, you can find some unspoiled beaches just a short distance from the masseria that attract more of a local crowd.

Rooms

There are three beautifully minimal rooms to choose from at Dagilupi, each with its own unique benefit. 

For great views, choose the Terrace Ostuni Suite. This spacious ground-level suite boasts a 25sq meter terrace with views of the olive grove and Ostuni foothills in the background. Cleverly repurposed niches––once used to conserve the families’ olive oil––contain open closets, displays for local wares, and intimate seating. As bathroom lovers, we have a bias towards this suite. Outfitted with a beautiful white trough tub with stainless steel black fixtures, the bathroom nods to the historical use of the property. We also don't mind the double-headed shower with views to the Adriatic Sea.

Cool off in the Garden Suite Ulivo, which offers respite from hot Apulian days. One-meter thick walls keep interiors temperate, and a lovely garden provides shade from the ancient olive tree at its focal point. A former stable now houses a massive open Italian shower, and an alcove is a home to a beautifully designed white desk for those who work while away.

We are suckers for the spring smells of citrus trees. If you are too, you might want to book the Deluxe Room Limoni situated by the lemon trees. The Mediterranean smells will gently waft through the room with the sea breezes. The courtyard accessed the room and was once used to enter the mill. Limoni is the smallest of the three rooms but offers some of the loveliest details, like the subtle multi-leveling of the space and original stone vaulted ceilings that contrast with the geometric details of the railing in the entrance.

Each room includes a king-sized bed, Italian shower, sumptuous linens, beach towels, slippers, robes, and other treats for you to enjoy.

Food and Drink

Breakfast is served daily with a local array of fresh and organic products. Dairy like ricotta, burrata, yogurt, and cheese come from the neighboring town of San Vito dei Normani. A family in Serranova provides prosciutto, capocollo, and guanciale from their humanely raise pigs and boars. All vegetables come from various areas in Puglia, from Fasano to Torre Guaceto, and the fruits are grown in Puglia, Calabria, Campania or Sicily. Danielle and Jean Louis purchase fresh bread daily from reputable bakers in Ostuni, and no Italian meal would be complete without a drizzle of olive oil pressed locally...this one brought to you by your hosts themselves, at Dagilupi.

Your Hosts

Owners Danielle and Jean Louis fell in love with this region so much that they decided to leave their life in France to “retire” and restore Dagilupi. It is in this countryside that they have realized their dream of living a life in simplicity and slowness, and nothing gives them more joy than to immerse travelers in the atmosphere and authenticity of Puglia. Every morning they prepare homemade breakfasts which include local specialties using fresh seasonal products. They offer exceptional wellness services like on-site yoga and holistic spa treatments under the canopy of the trees, and are happy to help guests choose restaurants or activities to make for more memorable experiences.

Our favorite property fact: more than 100 of the olive trees in the orchard are over 1000 years old…oh what these trees have seen and heard!

Good things to know

You won't find a swimming pool at Dagilupi. After all, the sea is so close that you won't miss it. While the owners love your kids, the hotel is adult only to maintain a serene vibe. Dagilupi is closed between December and March as your hosts take care of all your needs, and they need vacation too.

Slow down in Sicily

The Hotel

Susafa has been the passion of five generations of the Saeli-Rizzuto family––a family of agricultural entrepreneurs. The once-bustling farmhouse now houses the charming hotel with magnificent views of golden wheat fields–like Sicily's most authentic landscapes, of which the farm seems to have always and indissolubly been a part of. 

The hotel consists of seventeen ensuite rooms surrounding the courtyard and occupy the former stables and rooms used as a warehouse for grain. One of our favorite areas is the former barn that has been transformed into three new suites and a large living room where you can sink into a cushy sofa and read, have a nibble, or chat with fellow guests.

To Do

Learn to live the slow life by the masters themselves. The Saeli-Rizzutos offer a host of activities on the property such as garden tours, massages, picnics, stargazing, harvesting, or breaking bread and tipping the wine glass 'round a table of new and old friends. 

Enjoy the landscape, where you can spend hours walking or reading a book in the garden, courtyard, or while taking in the warm Sicilian sun at the pool. We love the views from the terrace accessed near the entrance. While at Susafa, you must get your cooking game on. Take advantage of the team's culinary genius and take one of the infamous cooking classes they offer, which are complimentary for guests.

Surroundings

Susàfa is located in the territory of Polizzi Generosa, at the gates of the Madonie Park. From here it is possible to visit the beautiful villages of Petralia, Geraci, Castelbuono, Isnello, Collesano. You can also easily reach the starting points for beautiful walks and hiking among the most beautiful paths in Sicily: Pizzo Carbonara, Monte San Salvatore, Cozzo Luminario, and the path of the Giant Hollies, to name a few. 

The sea is only 1 hour away, with the beach of Cefalù, one of the most beautiful and evocative in all of Sicily and if you're into art and city culture, you can't miss Palermo which is less than two hours.

Style

The owner of Susafa, Manfredi Rizzuto, is the creative mind behind the stylings of the Masseria. The farmhouse was renovated, maintaining the traditional Sicilian rustic features like terracotta tiles, exposed wooden beams, and stone walls. The rustic architecture combines with contemporary furnishings and details, creating a perfect juxtaposition between the natural materials and the comfort of modernity.

Food and Drink

Nearly everything that arrives on Susafa's table comes from their farm. Il Granaio is the restaurant brought to you by the Masseria and occupies the former grain house. Simple, genuine flavors, those that would remind any Sicilian of childhood, will mingle in your mouth. Those items not produced on the farm are bought from other local producers. A part of the company's production is dedicated to ancient Sicilian grains, thus combining a sustainability project with a guarantee of high-quality food.

Susafa is the result of a project by Manfredi, the young owner, heir to the family that has owned this charming estate for over two hundred years. Manfredi saw the property's potential and took the initiative to allocate the structure to hospitality while paying homage to the roots of the centuries-old business and ethos. History of the Masserie

Traditional Masserie are the architectural structures of large farms often inhabited by the owners, who in some cases take the form of villages. They spread through southern Italy starting from 1500 when Spain granted the nobles of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies the license to repopulate the countryside to get supplies and utilize nature's resources. They, therefore, represent the expression of an economic organization linked to large estates, a system that lasted in Sicily until the mid-twentieth century.
